How many of you are familiar with the story of Joshua defeating the Amalekites in Exodus 17?In this passage, Moses told Joshua to go and choose some men to fight the Amalekites. During the battle, Moses stood on the top of the hill with the Staff of God, his arms "lifted up to the throne of the Lord." (vs. 15) Here is the really interesting part, as long as Moses' arms were up, they were winning, but when his arms grew tired and began to lower, the Amalekites would begin to overtake Joshua and the Israelites. It was at that moment, Aaron and Hur put a rock for Moses to sit on and they held his arms up and God brought victory to Joshua and the Israelites with the defeat of the Amalekites.
Can you relate to that story? Now, I know we are not fighting Amalekites in the literal sense, yet, our lives are filled with "Amalekite" battles. My husband and I have found ourselves in daily battles that cause us to lift our arms up to the throne of God often.
Let me share with you an "Aaron and Hur" experience. Four months ago our son was diagnosed with Autism. It was as though we lost our footing. Our arms were becoming weary, and we felt as though we were alone. Then God did something wonderful. He sent us an "Aaron and Hur". This older couple became "arm rests" for us. They are never without encouragement and are always sharing that they are praying for us.
We are not the only ones who face battles daily, and these daily encounters can become wearisome. Our arms can become tired and we find ourselves being overtaken by whatever battle we are facing that day, that moment. As brothers and sisters in the Lord we are exhorted to rally around each other and be a type of "Aaron and Hur". We are called to pray for one another, to encourage one another, to carry one another's burdens. (James 5:16; 1 Thess. 5:11; Hebrews 3:13; 10:25; Galatians 6:2). Consider how you can be an "Aaron and Hur" today for someone close to you.
